Caves of Neptune
The Grotte di Nettuno (or “Caves of Neptune”) are one of the most important natural attractions not just in Alghero but, indeed, in the whole of Sardinia. These unusual caves are amongst the largest karst formations in Italy and are located at the base of the promontory of Capo Caccia, around 25 km from Alghero. Once inside the caves, you are sure to be dazzled by the extraordinary spectacle of the stalactites and stalagmites, all set against a backdrop that is truly magical.
To visit the caves, you can take the train, which reaches as far as the upper section of the promontory of Capo Caccia. Other options for this route include buses, coaches or your own car. In any case, if you take this route, you then have to make your way down the Escala del Cabirol, a cliff-edge stairway carved out of the stone, affording a breathtaking panorama. Alternatively, you can take the Linea Grotte (“Caves Line”) ferry from the tourist port of Alghero.
